Is 101 for fasting blood sugar considered pre-diabetes?

I’m twenty and have I think type 2 diabetes runs in my family. I want to know if 101 for fasting blood sugar is prediabete or not (I have been getting this reading for 2 days). I’ve been looking at well known diabetes organizations, universities about it and many of them say between 70-110, or 80-100. I know each organization and university has their own levels but I’m not sure which one to follow

Normal Fasting Blood Sugar
A normal fasting blood sugar (which is also the blood sugar a normal person will see right before a meal) is:

83 mg/dl (4.6 mmol/L) or less.

Many normal people have fasting blood sugars in the mid and high 70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/L) range.

Though most doctors will tell you any fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L) is "normal", there are several studies that suggest that testing with a fasting blood sugar in the mid 90 mg/dl (5 mmol/L) range often predicts diabetes that is diagnosed a decade later.

Why Does the Lab Sheet I Got With My Blood Test Give Much Higher "Normal" Values?
The reason that your doctor or lab might consider much higher numbers as "normal" is because doctors rely on "diagnostic criteria" set by the American Diabetes Association decades ago to define what are normal and abnormal blood sugar levels

The science used to define these diagnostic levels is outdated and inaccurate. The ADA resists changing these diagnostic criteria for reasons that are almost entirely political. You can read the grim details of how these diagnostic levels were set and why they avoid diagnosing people with diabetes until they have already developed diabetic complications.
Yes you are Pre-diabetic.
I, myself would start taking Metformin.
And exercise, nordic walking prefered.
Also a low glycemic index and load diet. Here is the website for 2,480 food that are rated. It should remain your eating bible for life. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
So now you really know the real scoop. Not the American Diabetes Associations bull crap…….

lose weight fasting cure type II diabetes

******** July 28 2009 ****** I found something even better than fasting to lose weight. Check out my video Getting Younger III Just by drinking the water I have lost 10 pounds with out even paying attention or fasting ********Using yoga and science discover the ancient method of rejuvenation. Learn how to cure type II diabetes in less than a year
Feb.7 – 262 lbs.
Feb. 28 – 255 lbs
Check back later for other weights.
march 4 -253
march 11 -253
march 21 – 257
oops weight went up. I have started eating whatever I want now, just to see how I feel. I feel wonderful, even though I started eating things like pizza again( almost a whole pie at one sitting). The taste of food is much better, even during the whole week – not just after the fast is broken.
I had three bagels with cream cheese and butter this morning. Delicious.
It is comforting to know that even though I eat whatever I want, whenever I want when I an not fasting, the weight does not balloon like it did when I did other diets. If I want, I could fast a second day during the week and the weight will go down.

April 29, 2008
Weight was 254.5 after fast on Monday. I am now fasting two days during the week for last 2 weeks. Weight has come down, but slowly. I am still eating very high caloric food, such as whipped cream, birthday cake, etc. It is some kind of karmic thing, I guess. But my waistline continues to contract. I had to drill some holes in my belts, as they no longer held up my pants. Two other facts stand out.My stomach has shrunk considerably. I cannot eat two baked potatoes at a sitting, as I could before. I was extremely full after 1. So I guess this is the cheap alternative to stomach stapling.

The second thing I noticed was my skin texture changed to a much smoother feel. I did not notice this effect with the weekly fast. I do know that the skin does get rid of toxins through the skin. Perhaps this effect is due to the continued fasting rather than the 2 days per week.
May 25, 2008. – I am still at the same weigth, in spite of fasting two days a week. I have noticed that I am finally now decreasing the total amount of food I am now eating, so I know the calorie count is now going down. I am going to now start a Hatha Yoga regimen, to enhance the further loss of weight.
I do feel much better, even if I still have the same weight. My blood pressure seems to have normalized at 120/80.
I have come across a wonderful free book on fasting, which covers some of the points made, plus a great deal more. The link is;

Am I at risk with pre-diabetes? (fasting glucose is 106)?

My doctor thought I might be hypoglycemic based on a glucose tolerance test dipping a bit. My normal fasting glucose is in the 80′s. I’ve always been thin and eat generally healthy, exercise every day. I started a perfect diet of NO sugar no alcohol and no caffeine, no processed carbs, lean organic protein at every meal for 3 months.
Now my fasting glucose is usually near 100. I don’t know if this is a good thing or bad thing? 95-120 is fasting is supposedly pre-diabetic now, but for a potential hypoglycemic is it a good thing? I’m so confused, it doesn’t make sense that eating healthier would make me unhealthier. I’m only 26. My grandma is the only one (maternal side) that has diabeties and my Aunt at risk. Dad’s side has none. Any ideas?
One of the sites I referenced for info: http://www.webmd.com/hw-popup/prediabetes-impaired-glucose-tolerance
Another site for symptom comparison: http://www.curetogether.com/Diabetes—Type-2/
Just as a clarification: My fasting glucose has been typically around 100-120 since I started the hypoglycemic/diabetic diet for 3 months now, but usually close to 100) — Not just a one-time reading of 106. My glucose throughout the day and after meals seems somewhat normal and within range.

I hope that this will help you…

In order to determine whether or not a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, health care providers conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Either test can be used to diagnose pre-diabetes or diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends the FPG because it is easier, faster, and less expensive to perform.

With the FPG test, a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl signals pre-diabetes. A person with a fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher has diabetes.

In the OGTT test, a person’s blood glucose level is measured after a fast and two hours after drinking a glucose-rich beverage. If the two-hour blood glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, the person tested has pre-diabetes. If the two-hour blood glucose level is at 200 mg/dl or higher, the person tested has diabetes.

gestational diabetes….fasting reading 100mg/dl or 5.5 mmo/l…..i am 39 weeks pregnant and baby is 4kg?

hi all…….i have gestational diabetes and my fasting glucose level is around 100 mg/dl or 5.5 mmol/l. is this a dangerous reading of glucose level….doctor told this is the marginal level for sugar glucose and i am controlling my sugal level with food, excercise and small units of insulin injection.
Now I am 39 weeks pregnant and and did ultrasound scanning and found out baby is 4kg (8.8 pounds)…..i am literally scared about my gestational diabetes and I wanted to know how this is going to effect my baby after his birth? Please read the following questions and do give me a answer…

1.whether my glucose reading is fine……..
2. how my gestational diabetes going to effect my baby after birth.
3. Now the scan report seems to very normal and my baby is perfectly fine..but i am scared about after his birth….how he is going to effected because of my glucose level.

only my fasting glucose level seems to be high….all post meals glucose reading always used to be under 120mg/dl.

100 is a very normal level
At 39 weeks your baby is ready to come out.
Since you were dxed with gestational diabetes, they may put the baby into the NICU to check his/her blood sugars.
Babies with diabetic mothers tend to be big and may have very low sugars and will need IV sugar.Usually at 24 hours- this is resolved.
Ask your doctor everything. She knows all about it.
Congratulations.

If you use smokeless tobacco (dip) will it affect a fasting glucose test for diabetes?

I am talking about flavored dips which contain sugar but I have no idea how much.

Yes. Even without the flavoring, nicotine in the dip raises blood glucose AND depresses insulin secretion. If the flavoring contains sugar, that just adds to the problem, but I doubt it would be a significantly large affect. Let your doctor you dipped.
