The kidneys are the only organs in the body that can eliminate H+ ion to make body fluids less acidic. The lungs can only compensate by making you breath faster and deeper (hyperventilation) so that the blood can become more alkaline. The lungs cannot compensate for long as if that happens too long a person would pass out. But the kidneys will continue to eliminate H+ in the urine (and the ketone bodies too). In worst case intravenous (IV) administration of HCO3 solution is required to avoid death.

Can a person go into ketoacidosis without being diabetic?

I have ketone test strips and when I took one this morning it put me in the large level. I have been on a fast for about three days now and would like to continue, however I am concerned about how high the level is. Is it dangerous for a person who is not diabetic to have a very high level of ketones in their blood?

Diabetic ketoacidosis and insulin/glucose infusion?

Why would you include glucose in an infusion of insulin to treat a child with diabetic ketoacidosis?

Insulin, so that your body takes the sugar floating around your body. If you don’t give insulin and your into state of diabetic ketoacidosis, your body will go crazy, your body will metabolize fats (ketones is the by product or end product, i forgot, of fat metabolism) It will keep metabolizing fats because your body thinks that you need glucose because glucose cannot go inside your cell because there are no insulin in your body. Lets say your the glucose and your house is the cell, your door is locked, you cannot get in unless you have your key. Insulin acts like a door key. They also give insulin to treat the underlying disease which is diabetes. also, as the other guy said health care professional dont like to over correct it cuz you might get a low blood sugar

Ketostix are a great tool for measuring the amount of ketones your body is producing. But, as Jimmy explains in this video, there is no such thing as “light” or “heavy” ketosis as is often misunderstood. If you show any color change, then you are in ketosis. And even if you show NO ketones, you could still be in ketosis and using up all of your ketone bodies.

The bottom line is to NOT get discouraged by these sticks. Consume less than 50g carbohydrates daily and you WILL be in ketosis and well on your way to burning stored fat. WOO HOO!
